What Is Gynecomastia?

As the simplest meaning, gynecomastia is a situation for men having enlarged breasts. Having unwanted enlarged breasts can be the result of an imbalance of hormones (testosterone and estrogen). Surprisingly, gynecomastia does not affect both breasts evenly. Sometimes, it affects one breast. But sometimes it unevenly affects both breasts.

Ginecomastia can be seen in a newborn, a boy, a teenager, and even an old man. This happens when their normal hormonal levels change. Usually, it is not considered a problem. However, especially for teenagers and young adults, it can be a tough condition to deal with. Men with this condition may rarely have pain in their breasts.

In some cases, gynecomastia can disappear on its own. This happens when the hormonal change reverses on the patient’s body. If it remains for a long time and makes the patient uncomfortable, the doctors can suggest medication and even surgery to help.

How Can You Understand If You Have Gynecomastia or Not?

Even though it is thought that only women produce estrogen, men also produce limited amounts of estrogen besides testosterone. Also, women produce limited amounts of testosterone besides estrogen. In short, both men and women can produce estrogen and testosterone. There is a hormonal balance.

a)     What Causes Gynecomastia in Infants?

When infants have gynecomastia, it can be very surprising for their parents. Yet, it is not uncommon for infants to have this condition. More than fifty percent of newborn boys have enlarged breasts. The reason for this situation is the mother’s estrogen level that passes to the baby. It usually disappears in two or three weeks after they are born.

b)    What Causes Gynecomastia in Teenagers?

In the teenage years, a lot of changes happen in a girl’s and a boy’s bodies. The hormonal levels change, and teenagers try to cope with the changes physically and mentally. In some cases, teenage boys can have gynecomastia. However, it usually disappears in a few months.

c)     What Causes Gynecomastia in Middle-Aged Adults?

Many pieces of research have been done about the age range of men who has gynecomastia. It can be seen that the ages 50 to 80 are the ones with which the symptoms of enlarged breasts are felt. Most men with enlarged breasts do not feel any pain or discomfort physically.

4-    Diseases Can Cause Gynecomastia

Some of the diseases can affect the hormonal balance, which directly causes gynecomastia. Those illnesses and diseases can be seen on the list below.

  • Aging: Even though it is not an illness or a disease, aging can affect the hormonal levels of your body.
  • Kidney Failure: To be able to treat kidney failure, dialysis is used. Besides many side effects of dialysis, it causes hormonal changes.
  • Starvation: When a man starves or has fewer nutrients than he needs, the testosterone hormone level in his body decreases while the estrogen level stays the same. In this case, gynecomastia is likely to be experienced.
  • Hypogonadism: This is the general definition of the lack of testosterone production of a man.
  • Liver failure / Cirrhosis: Cirrhosis and liver failure can be a result of consuming a lot of alcohol. These diseases can be associated with hormonal changes.
